My name is Rose and I create mixed media art around folklore and myth. I use many materials to make my work such as, oil paint, acrylic, pastels and pieces with wood and textiles. I am always willing to try new materials and challenge myself with medium and the size of my work even if I default to painting, experimenting this way allows me to develop my practice. I create art to share stories and display a section of my mind in a world where political and abstract art seem more important and I want to make something people from all backgrounds can connect to and escape in. My work aims to get you lost in a story or to open your mind to how magic was never lost people just lost their wonder. Which is really just a longwinded and fancy way of saying my work is about escapism and that there seems to be gap for it. But my work isn’t just centered around escapism it also delves into historical impacts on lore and how changes in global communication greatly affected not only the lore but also the way lore is shared in our modern world.

My process is to start with a folk tale or piece of lore and find depictions of how it changed throughout history. This leads me to creating digital drawings of the different variations of characters and creatures. This will be used as a base for a painting or a series around this lore. This can be seen in my current work with my research on fairies and how they were once great elemental beings who were feared changed into something more juvenile and manufactured. I create these pieces with inspiration from artists like Richard Dadd, Paula Rego and Josephine wall and many others. Richard Dadd inspired me because of his use of frames in his pieces and the theatre like lights in his paintings and Paula Rego and he way of re-contextualizing fairy tales make me want to push my work further. Using light and stories the same way they do especially with Rego using illustrations in a fine art context.
I’m currently working with fairy folklore and their representation in art and story but in the future, I want to look more into creatures and local lore. I would like to explore more of the darker side of folktales and create work on a scale that would reflect this creating wok that is a variety of sizes. I also have an idea for an installation piece I want to work towards which would be a series of art works exploring this in frames and piled together on a wall which I have begun making sketches and digital mock-ups for.
